Scheepjes CAL 2016 - Last Dance on the Beach

The Scheepjes CAL 2016 is coming to an end, after almost a year of organisation & almost 3 months of the CAL patterns being released, today we arrive at the final part : the border.

I remember meeting with Marinke over a year ago when she presented the ideas for this CAL. I also remember talking with Marinke’s family, shortly after her passing about how they wanted this project to continue in her memory.
My task was to make this happen.

It has been a much longer journey than a ‘normal’ CAL, it’s also been a much more emotional journey as many of us working on this CAL knew Marinke personally and were still grieving for our friend who was now gone.
Some words in the CAL groups have hurt, when in an online group some people do not consider that there are real people behind the screen. Those people have lost a dear friend and are, despite their sadness, still trying to honour their friends’ wishes. But the amazing designers and fabulous people at Scheepjes have supported each other through the course of this CAL because it was important to us to realise this CAL in Marinke’s name and to uphold her families’ wish.

However, the many words of encouragement, kindness and support have far outnumbered the hurtful comments.  Each and every one of them has been greatly appreciated. The crochet community is mainly made up of wonderfully enthusiastic, supportive and helpful people, as Marinke herself knew.

Soon Marinke’s family will be invited to Scheepjes HQ, so that together with Scheepjes they can hand over the charitable donations this CAL has raised to the MIND organisation and charity. We will of course share this happy event with you all who have contributed.

But for now, I leave you with the border pattern. As my role has been in this and many CAL’s, I pull together all the different elements and put them together to hopefully create a beautiful project. In the same way, this border pulls together all your work of the last 13 weeks and finishes your beautiful blanket.
I urge you all to take the time as you crochet your final few stitches, to think about Marinke (Wink) and what she has brought into your life. How she has reached through her crochet and touched your life in some way. How she has taught you the importance of gauge, new stitches and techniques, that not all crochet hooks are the same, introduced you to a new yarn, the joy of texture and how fragile life can be.

When your blanket is complete, go Dance on the Beach one last time for Wink.

Please share your last dance photos with us on Facebook and Instagram by #ScheepjesCAL2016 so that everyone who has contributed to the making of this CAL, Marinke’s family and friends can all share in your creations and enjoy this final dance with you.

  3. Simy, I can only imagine how this has been for you. You have nurtured and grown this beautiful concept to reality for so many of us to pay tribute to a beautiful girl whom we all loved in our own ways. You have run the CAL group with such warmth, generosity, brilliant yarn enabling and all the while being so busy behind the scenes on other projects. I now for me that this is not the end of this CAL but the beginning of what I hope to be a long and enduring relationship with you and future Scheepjes CALs. Thank you, those words dont seem to be enough.

  7. This was my first CAL and very special indeed. I loved every minute of it, so much so that I am making 2 blankets and that I can't bear to stop just yet and I making more squares. I started to crochet when I was a little girl at school and occasionally came back to it but I've learned more in thd past 3 months than in the years before. Thank you and all the designers for all the love and effort you put into this project. xoxo

  11. Thank you Simy I have really enjoyed this my first CAL and it won't be my last. I have learnt so many new things about crocheting and did become obsessed with it. Who would have thought a knitter could have been converted to a crochet.i will admit my squares did go a bit missed shaped at times and the brilliant tutorials made things so much easier to see what I was doing wrong. I still have my sea kit to finish then the rain one you do so I will be busy for a while then I can start the cal from 2014 wool already purchased. I want to thank all of you for Bringing this cal to so many people Wink will be looking down and smiling on all of you Thank you again Best wishes x julie

  13. This has been my first CAL. I knew from the first sneak peak that I wanted to participate. It has been such a special experience. Thank you, Simy, for all of your hard work, for your gentleness in dealing with Facebook drama, for all of the things that went unseen. I'm so proud of the blankets I'm making and so grateful for the chance to be a part of something so meaningful.
